Breakdancing Is Now An Olympic Sport

For the first time, breaking is an Olympic sport!

You probably know it as breakdancing – those spinning-on-the-floor moves that became popular in the 1970s & ’80s.

Well, in recent years, it’s turned into a sport with one-on-one breaking battles all over the world. Breaking will make its Olympic debut at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris.

The women begin on August 9 and the men on August 10.

Team USA has four breakdancers going to the Olympics.

The competition itself is a little different than anything you may have seen before, too! The breakers have no idea what music they’ll be competing to, instead, the competition emphasizes improvisation!

Two of USA’s breakdancers, Victor Montalvo and Jeffrey Louis, shared their favorite ‘breaking’ songs with Billboard. Here’s a sample!

“Cavern” by Liquid Liquid

“Hot Potato” by Freestyle Fellowship

“Protect Ya Neck” by Wu-Tang Clan

“Dead Wrong” by The Notorious B.I.G. featuring Eminem
