It was today in 1990 that Paula Abdul hit #1 with one of her biggest songs, “Opposites Attract.” And although the song, featuring the Wild Pair on backup vocals, was certainly well done, the VIDEO took it to a whole new level.
Inspired by Gene Kelly’s movie “Anchors Aweigh” from years earlier, producers decided using animation with a character they invented, “MC SKAT CAT,” would help the song and video stand out. And THEY WERE SO RIGHT. They took a technique called “rotoscoping” with they had an actor stand in dancing with Paula in front of a green screen (like what meteorologists use to do the weather on TV), then they edited they edited out the human, and over-layed an animation of everyone’s favorite music video feline.
The result: one of the music videos that we’ll NEVER forget from the early ’90s. If it’s been awhile since you’ve enjoyed Paula and SKAT CAT, enjoy them together today.
And while the Internet still enjoys the snapchat “I AM NOT A CAT” filter… you’ll know that sometimes, JUST SOMETIMES, the subject of the video IS INDEED a cat.
