It’s a CLASS OF 1993 REUNION WEEKEND! What hit, and what missed?

The TRUTH is out there!

Ahh, 1993.  You’re kind of the middle child of years of music.   You don’t have the pop sensibilities of the mid ’80s, or the bubble gum of the late ’90s.  You’re a mix of grunge, hip hop, a few mid-tempo pop hits, and a changing time in the world.  But amidst those changes came some artists like Pearl Jam and Nirvana, on their way to becoming household names, and some of the best R&B and hip hop ever recorded.  Plus, some great pop culture trends we all enjoyed.  So, without further ado, enjoy the HITS…and the MISSES… of 1993!

THE HITS

3) CHEESY TECHNO POP – While the grunge and hip hop was at its peak, there was also a burgeoning market for pop music with a dance beat: ’90s techno.  Artists like Haddaway, Culture Beat, Captain Hollywood, Bizarre Inc., Robin S., and others blew up BIG.  And many of them faded away as quickly as they hit.  But for that moment in time, their beats were HAWT.

2) THE X-FILES.  Watching Mulder and Scully became a BIG highlight of the week in our house growing up, and that lasted all the way through the ’90s and into the 2000s.  If you were a fan of sci-fi, and weren’t quite sure WHAT to believe, this WAS IT.

1) JURASSIC PARK.  If it wasn’t an alien invasion that had us creeped out, it was DINOSAURS.  Could we really extract that DNA out of amber stones via mosquitos?  Could we really resurrect dinosaurs?  Was Jeff Goldblum REALLY THAT SMART?  Well… in the case of the movie… YES.

AND THE MISSES…

3) SAVED BY THE BELL: THE NEW CLASS.  When Mr. Belding, and a return of Screech in year two, is the best you can do… maybe you should have let it go.  SBTB’s “The New Class” episodes just never had the appeal of the original, had revolving cast doors (beyond JUST Tori), and never connected with audiences either.   It’s a good lesson in how sometimes, if you have something great, you should just let it run its course.

2) MICHAEL JORDAN AS A BASEBALL PLAYER.  Listen, MJ: you’re one of the best, if not THEE best athlete of all time.  You have a bazillion awards and basketball titles.  You’ve hit a hole in one on the golf course.  And it was a cute idea to see you playing for the Chicago White Sox AA affiliate.  It just didn’t work out.  Luckily, Michael realized this soon after retiring from the Chicago Bulls and returned two years later…and brought a few more championship banners to Chicago.

1) CHEVY CHASE.  Oof.  Against David Letterman and Jay Leno, Chevy Chase’s talk show couldn’t even hold on for two months.  It was that bad, and it was that hard to watch.  Like Michael Jordan above, PROPS, CHEVY, for giving this a shot.  But shame on all the network execs that didn’t set the show, or HIM, up for success.  This is just hard to watch.

So, here’s to you, Class of 1993!  Enjoy these hits, these misses, and YOUR music all this weekend on Throwback Nation Radio.  Enjoy!
