Legendary 1991 Dead Concert Returns to the Big Screen

Deadheads will have a rare opportunity to experience one of the Grateful Dead’s most celebrated late-career performances on the big screen. The band’s complete June 17, 1991 concert at Giants Stadium is returning to select theaters on August 8 and 10 as part of the annual Grateful Dead Meet-Up at the Movies.

The concert captured the band performing before a massive New Jersey crowd with Bruce Hornsby and Vince Welnick joining the lineup. The set includes fan favorites such as “Truckin’,” “Uncle John’s Band,” “Eyes of the World” and “China Doll,” along with several appearances by “Dark Star” woven throughout the show. Originally recorded on 48-track analog tape, the concert has been restored for a powerful theatrical presentation.

The screening celebrates the 35th anniversary of a show many Deadheads consider one of the band’s finest performances from the 1990s. It also arrives during a meaningful stretch on the Grateful Dead calendar, between Jerry Garcia’s birthday on August 1 and the anniversary of his death on August 9.

While the Grateful Dead built their reputation on live performances and a fiercely devoted following, they also enjoyed one of the defining rock hits of the late ’80s. “Touch of Grey” reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1987, becoming the band’s only Top 40 pop single.
