Former En Vogue Member Reveals She’s Been Living in Her Car

A former member of the ’90s girl group En Vogue has released a very personal YouTube video telling fans that she is homeless and has been living in her car for the past three years.

Dawn Robinson was a founding member of En Vogue. Known for songs like “Hold On,” “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It),” and “Free Your Mind,” the group first rose to fame in 1990. The group notably scored more number one singles on the US R&B chart than any other female group – except for The Supremes!

Robinson left En Vogue in 1997 due to failed contractual negotiations. She rejoined briefly in 2008, but by 2010 had left again and attempted to form a new group.

Now, she has revealed that in the years following her singing career, she’s encountered some difficulties.

In the video posted to YouTube on Tuesday, March 11, Robinson said she had relocated to Los Angeles on the advice of her former manager.

That didn’t work out – Robinson said in the video that “sometimes people want to trap you and keep you in a situation where you’re vulnerable and depending on them,. So I got out of there.”

Robinson said she researched “car life,” and started living in her vehicle. She said it was like a camping trip – and she felt free.

She said she wasn’t sharing the news to get any sympathy or pity – and the whole experience has been a learning lesson.

Robinson wrote in the caption to the video:

Sometimes in life, we end up in situations that we weren’t expecting. There’s something we need to learn or teach but we’re too afraid to push ourselves out of our comfort zones to do it so the universe does it for us!
During this growth period, we either learn to trust ourselves or give in to fear and fail.

I took a risk and jumped head first into car life and WOW, what a crazy, fun, sometimes scary ride it’s been lol!
For me, failure is NOT an option.

Being vulnerable sucks but here I GROW

En Vogue has continued to perform without Robinson. In 2022, they were part of the Mixtape Tour with New Kids on the Block, and in 2023, they joined TLC and Shaggy on the Hot Summer Nights tour. They performed at the NBA All-Star Game earlier this year.
