Happy 79th Birthday to Elton John!

Today Sir Elton John celebrates his 79th birthday!

It’s hard to imagine what music would be like had Reginald Kenneth Dwight not been born on March 25, 1947.

Born in Pinner, England, he learned to play piano as a young boy and earned a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. He started to sing in the school choir and by age 15, was performing in a local pub. He met Bernie Taupin in the 1960s, and theirs was a songwriting partnership that would become one of the most successful in history.

He is the most successful solo artist in the history of the U.S. Billboard charts. He’s an EGOT winner, a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and was knighted in 1998.

On top of all that, he’s a major philanthropist, raising over $600 million with the Elton John AIDS Foundation. He married husband David Furnish in 2014 and is now a father of two boys.

So, happy birthday to Sir Elton John, and to celebrate his 79th year, here are all NINE of his No. 1 songs in the U.S.! Most of them predate the Throwback Nation Radio era, but their sound is timeless!
