Night 7 of our Throwback Games looks at the songs that had a slooooow build.
The songs that took forever to climb the charts… but once they did, they became some of the biggest songs of the ’80s & ’90s!
Now, we present our medal-winning Rock Climbing songs!
#3 “Baby, Come To Me” by Patti Austen & James Ingram.
This song was first released in 1982. It peaked at No. 73 on the Billboard chart in April of that year, and that may have been it. But, as luck would have it, the soap opera “General Hospital” used the song as the love theme for power couple Luke and Laura. The song was re-released and hit No. 1 in February 1983.
#2 “Red Red Wine” by UB40
UB40 recorded a cover of this Neil Diamond song and released it in 1983. It did okay. Then in 1988, five years later, UB40 performed the song at Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday and the song then zoomed to No. 1!
#1 “Macarena” by Los Del Rio
Los Del Rio first recorded this song in 1993. It got a little more traction in 1995 with a remix by the Bayside Boys. But, what really caused this song to take off a year or so later, was THE dance! The Macarena dance became a cultural phenomenon and got Los Del Rio their first and only No. 1 hit song!
