‘Ferris Bueller’ Turns 38 – Where Are They Now?

The movie about a truly epic day of playing hooky was released 38 years ago!

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” premiered June 11, 1986. It follows high school senior Ferris Bueller as he skips school with his best friend Cameron and girlfriend Sloane in downtown Chicago, with his sister and principal in hot pursuit!

The movie was written, produced, and directed by John Hughes. It was the tenth-highest grossing film of ’86.

The film starred Matthew Broderick, Mia Sara, and Alan Ruck, with supporting roles from Jennifer Grey, Jeffrey Jones, Edie McClurg, and Charlie Sheen. So where is the cast now and what have they been up to? Let’s take a look!

Ferris Bueller

Matthew Broderick brought Ferris to life in such a charming way! He’s now 62, married to actress Sarah Jessica Parker, and father of three. He’s starred in a number of film and stage productions, and lent his voice to several animated films as well, including “Bee Movie.” He’s also won two Tony Awards.

Sloane Peterson

Mia Sara played Ferris’ girlfriend Sloane in the movie. She’s now 56! Her debut film role was just before “Ferris,” in “Legend” with Tom Cruise. She has appeared in several movies and television shows. She is married to Brian Henson, son of Jim Henson, who created the Muppets!

Cameron Frye

Alan Ruck portrayed Ferris’ best friend Cameron. Ruck is friends with Matthew Broderick in real life, and Broderick encouraged him to audition for the role of Cameron! Ruck has gone on to star in TV’s “Spin City” and most recently, HBO’s “Succession.” He is married and has four children.

Jeannie Bueller

Jennifer Grey was Ferris’ sister Jeannie, who hated her brother but ultimately saved him from getting caught! Grey’s biggest role was “Dirty Dancing” the year after “Ferris.” She’s appeared in several other movies since and also won “Dancing with the Stars” in 2010! She is now 64.

Principal Ed Rooney

Jeffrey Jones played the Principal who was hell-bent on busting Ferris. He went on to act in other notable films like “Beetlejuice,” “Howard the Duck,” and “The Hunt for Red October.” He also acted on the HBO series “Deadwood.” Jones was arrested in 2002 for child pornography and placed on the California Department of Justice national sex offender database.

Grace – The Secretary

Edie McClurg played Principal Rooney’s secretary Grace, who managed to be in-the-know and dense all at the same time! She has had supporting roles in a number of films and TV shows, including “Planes Trains and Automobiles,” “Flubber,” and “The Hogan Family.” She is now 78 and under a conservatorship. Family and friends reportedly made the request in 2019 after neurological tests showed she was unable to live alone without assistance.

Garth Volbeck

Raise your hand if you remembered that was the name of the bad boy who makes out with Jeannie at the police station? I’m not sure I ever knew his name, but I did know he was portrayed by Charlie Sheen. You probably know he’s the son of Martin, brother of Emilio, who has appeared in many movies and TV shows. He’s battled substance abuse, revealed he’s HIV-positive, and has gone through very public and messy divorces. He has five children and one grandchild. Sheen is now 58.
