LOVE TRAX: How We First Met Mariah
Today’s THROWBACK LOVE TRAX feature is a special one!
This song is our very first introduction to the one and only Mariah Carey!
“Vision of Love” was the debut single from her debut album, Mariah Carey, in 1990.
It features Carey’s famous whistle register, the highest register of the human voice. It also features her usage of melisma, the singing of a single syllable while moving between different notes. It’s a mix of pop, R&B, gospel, and soul.
Carey wrote the song with the help of songwriter Ben Margulies. The lyrics represent her dreams of overcoming adversity to achieve her dreams – her vision of love that she has always believed in.
The song was nominated for three Grammys, winning one for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1991. It hit No. 1 and stayed there for four weeks.
Beyoncé, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, and Kelly Clarkson have all said this song specifically inspired them in their own singing careers.
Dahling, there’s no denying the sheer talent of Ms. Mariah Carey!
