Billy Joel Wraps Up Residency With Special Guests

Billy Joel had said he would continue his Madison Square Garden residency as long as there was demand.

When it became clear after 100+ shows that the demand was not waning anytime soon, it was decided to stop at the nice round number of 150.

That 150th show happened last night – and by all accounts, it was a show to remember!

Joel played all the songs we’ve all loved over the years, songs like “Pressure,” “Vienna,” “Only the Good Die Young.”

According to Billboard, Joel told the crowd:

“Let me mention a couple of things that we’ve done. We were the first group to play at Yankee Stadium [in 1990]. We were the last band to play at Shea Stadium [in 2008]. We played Berlin the night that the Berlin Wall came down [in 1990, so not quite]. We were the first American full-fledged performance in the Soviet Union [in 1987]. And we were the first band to play after Castro came to power, and we played Cuba [1979]. We played in front of the Coliseum in Rome for a half million people [in 2006]. And the food was great. But out of all of them, this is the best. There’s no place like this.”

Joel brought out his two youngest daughters for a song, and then introduced Axl Rose from Guns N’ Roses. The two played “Live and Let Die” and “Highway to Hell.”

While this is the end of his MSG residency, he will not stop performing for sold-out crowds. Next month he flies to England and then has a series of stadium shows here in the U.S. through the rest of the year.
