HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAVE MATTHEWS! Let’s celebrate with THE TOP 3 from DMB.
The king of '90s chill turns 54 today.
You may have seen our “DAVE AND CHILL” Spotify podcast yesterday; now with your votes and data from the Billboard charts, we’ve narrowed your nominations to Dave’s top 3 songs of all time. And although “Before These Crowded Streets” has a lot of sentimental value to me… tear… none of the songs from it QUITE made it to the top 3. But those that did are EN FUEGO.
3) Ants Marching – In the last few weeks, you may have seen and heard this song as the soundtrack to a ranting racist being smacked in the face with a twisted tea. (No, that’s not a joke, it’s true – see it here.) But even back in the day when this song was a part of “Under The Table and Dreaming,” its’ iconic drum lick SMACKED. Enjoy!
2) What Would You Say – With a harmonica solo from Blues Traveler’s John Popper, and SOOOOO MUUUUUUUCH FLANNNNNNELLLLLL (except on the naked models)… this song SCREAMS the ’90s.
1) Crash Into Me – GUYS – it’s NOT A LOVE SONG… it’s a CREEPER SONG! Who knew, right? Well, Dave did; he admitted in the late ’90s to VH1 that “Crash Into Me” is actually about someone spying on someone they were into. (Can you say “Every Breath You Take” by the Police? They’re BOTH CREEPY.) But, because we interpret music however we choose, this has been interpreted by many as his sexiest. Which ever way you look at it, it IS Dave’s biggest, and still one of his most revered to this day.
Happy birthday, Dave, and thanks for spreading the love of all these great Throwbacks from the ’90s and into the 2000s too.
