THROWBACK GAMES: Summer Hits

We’re starting to wind down our Throwback Games but we’re not done yet!

Tonight’s edition is one of our favorites… Summer Hits! We’re featuring our top songs about summer, and we wish we could give the gold to them all!

#3 “Summer Girls” by LFO

This song came out in 1999 and was a huge hit that summer. In 2010, Billboard magazine named it the 14th-biggest summer song of all time.

#2 “Cruel Summer” by Bananarama

The song came out in 1983 but didn’t really become a hit until 1984, when it was featured in the movie “The Karate Kid.” It’s instantly recognizable with the inclusion of the marimbas. Said co-singer Sara Dallin of the inspiration behind the song, “We were just moaning because all our friends were going on holiday and we couldn’t, and the city is very oppressive in the heat in London and New York or wherever. So that was the kind of inspiration for it.”

#1 “Summer of ’69” by Bryan Adams

Canadian singer Bryan Adams released this song not in 1969 but in 1985. Adams wrote it with his longtime collaborator, Jim Vallance, who said the song is about trying to decide between settling down or becoming a rock star. Adams, on the other hand, told CBS in 2008 that the meaning is more intimate.
