A weekend to salute David Bowie
This birth, and his untimely passing.
It was today, January 8, 1947, that David Robert Jones was born into the world. It wouldn’t be until years later that we got to know him by his stage name – David Bowie – and he would become a true revolutionary in rock and pop music. It was also this weekend five years ago, that we said goodbye to David, just two days after his 69th birthday on January 10, 2016.
David Bowie was ahead of his time in so many ways. He was experimental; gender-bending; beating down stereotypes and building sound in new and unique ways. His career flourished in the post-psychedelic 70s, and continued to thrive into the 80s. Tonight, we salute his TOP 3 of the 1980s, and share a very special story on one of his biggest.
3) China Girl – First released by Iggy Pop in 1977, David Bowie co-wrote the song and released his better-known version in 1983. This was part of the “Let’s Dance” album, co-produced by Chic’s Nile Rodgers.
2) Modern Love – Also produced by Rodgers, Bowie used hints of Little Richard-esque piano on this song, which was first on the album. If you were listening to this on vinyl for the first time, you HAD to be impressed by what you were about to hear.
