LOVE TRAX: This Song Was Born in a Dream

And we’ve come to the end… our very last THROWBACK LOVE TRAX feature, sharing the stories behind your favorite love songs of the ’80s & ’90s!

Today’s song is a good one: “Faithfully” by Journey.

Keyboardist Jonathan Cain wrote the song. He said he jotted down the  lyrics “highway run into the midnight sun” on a paper napkin while on a tour bus. He fell asleep and the melody came to him in a dream. He woke up, got to work, and had the song done in half an hour! He said he’d never had a song come to him so quickly – it was supernatural!

“Faithfully” was a huge hit for Journey in 1983. It hit a high of only No. 12 on the Billboard chart, but it’s endured for years, with one classic rock critic calling it the “greatest power ballad of all time.”
